Pergola Scores 13, Kerr Nets Double-Double in Women's Basketball Defeat Versus Southern Connecticut

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Freshman Northeast-10 Rookie of the Week Brie Pergola (Torrington, Conn./Torrington) finished her third-straight game in double-digits and junior Alexandria Kerr (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) net her first double double of the season as the University of New Haven women's basketball team dropped an NE10 rivalry matchup at Charger Gym on Wednesday evening, 71-46.
 
Pergola shot 4-of-9 from the floor on the night and made the only Charger three-pointer in the contest on her one attempt. She also converted on 4-of-6 free throws and notched three rebounds and three steals. Kerr's double double came as the 13th of her career and first of the season for New Haven as she finished with 12 points and a season-high 10 rebounds, the most of any Charger this season.
 
Juniors Allieyuah Cubbage, Micah Wormack (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) and Katia Oge (New City, N.Y./Immaculate Heart Academy) all made two field goals on the night, with Cubbage leading the group with seven points and a career-high two blocks while Oge  and junior Sianna Van Dyke (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) each finished with two steals.
 
The Owls held the Chargers to only 27-percent shooting on the night, however scored 14 points off 20 Owl turnovers and while also scoring 16 second chance points.  
 
 
FIRST QUARTER NOTES:
  • Oge opened up the scoring for the contest with a layup assisted by Pergola before Southern Connecticut put in two straight baskets to get an early lead.
  • Pergola got a pass from Kerr and hit a three-point basket at the 6:17 mark to knot the contest at eight points apiece.
  • Southern Connecticut's Miranda Crenshaw put in a layup at the 5:24 mark, sparking a 12-0 run for the Owls. Van Dyke broke up the run with a free throw, and Cubbage broke through with the first Charger field goal in four minutes with a layup to make the score 20-11 in favor of the Owls.
  • Southern Connecticut got two more points with just over a minute remaining before Kerr went for a three-point shot just before the buzzer and collected her own rebound but could not get the second-chance layup in before the end of the first frame.
  • Oge and Pergola led the way with three points in the quarter, while six different Chargers had one rebound each. The Owls had the scoring edge after the first ten minutes, leading New Haven 22-11.
 
SECOND QUARTER NOTES:
  • Pergola scored first in the second to cut the Owl lead to nine points. Southern Connecticut extended its lead with a 9-2 run, followed by a Cubbage layup and Pergola Jumper late in the frame.
  • New Haven struggled to find the shooting touch in the second stanza, only shooting 4-of-11 from the floor, however shot 75-percent from the charity stripe to help the scoring.
  • In the second quarter, Pergola converted on 2-of-3 shots from the field with a free throw to help her to five points in the frame. Cubbage also added five points for the Chargers with a field goal and three-of-four baskets from the free throw line.
  • In the battle of the boards, Southern Connecticut narrowly had the advantage by the end of the first half, 17-16.
  • Heading into the locker room, Pergola pace the Chargers offense in the first half with eight points, while Kerr and Cubbage were tied for the most rebounds with three.
 
THIRD QUARTER NOTES:
  • Pergola hit a fading jump shot at the 8:45 mark before Southern Connecticut sparked another big Owl run to get their largest lead of the game.
  • New Haven got some momentum late in the third quarter with nine straight points, as Kerr and Wormack combined for all nine of those points to bring the Chargers back within 16. During the stretch, Wormack helped light a fire with an offensive rebound off of a missed jumper and was fouled and converted on the free throw for the successful three-point play.
 
FOURTH QUARTER NOTES:
  • Kerr collected a pass from junior Aliyah Christy (Stratford, Conn./King Low Heywood Thomas) to net the first two points for the Chargers in the final stanza. Southern Connecticut expanded the lead with seven more points, before Kerr put in the second Charger field goal of the fourth quarter with 3:46 remaining.
  • Before Southern Connecticut's final late field goal, New Haven held the Owls scoreless for 3:59 and scored seven straight points in the process. In the stretch, Kerr, Pergola, and junior Oluwaseun Shittu (Johnston, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) went a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.
 
New Haven returns to the hardwood on its home court against Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off at Charger Gymnasium is slated for 1:00. For fans who are unable to attend the game, live stats on video will be available on the Charger Sports Network.
