One of 37 players to score 1,000 or more points in his career, Brian Smith enters the New Haven Athletics Hall of Fame as the fifth leading scorer in program history with 1,936 points averaging 16.7 points per game during his time with the Blue and Gold. Smith is a two-time New England Collegiate Conference All-Conference selection who helped lead the New Haven men’s basketball team to a pair of NCAA Division II Championship appearances and an appearance in the NECC Championship all four years, including a trip to the title game in 1989. At the time of his graduation, Smith’s name could be found in a number of career records including field goals made, three-point field goals made, three-point field goal percentage, scoring average, blocked shots and steals. Overall, during his career, the Chargers amassed 85 victories, including a pair of 20-win seasons.
