A dependable player on the court for Head Coach Don Ormrod, Dick Jackson was one of the Charger originals, playing with the first varsity team.
In his freshman season of 1961-62, Jackson led the team with a blistering .800 free throw percentage. The former East Haven High School standout was one of Ormrod’s most important figures in a 1963-64 campaign that ended with a 22-3 record and a Southern New England Conference Championship.
His career numbers include 14.8 points per game, 9.5 rebounds, and a .733 free throw percentage. Jackson, who ranked fifth all-time in points and seventh in rebounds at the time of his 1982 Hall of Fame induction, missed only five games in his career. His 1,335 career points still ranks 17th all-time in school history.
Despite the tension and distractions in the big moments – and there were many – Dick Jackson always could be counted on to make the pressure basket and free throw.
