One of the most talented players in New England collegiate basketball history, Gary Liberatore has forever left his mark in New Haven College and University of New Haven athletics lore.
A smooth-shooting guard who baffled opposing coaches tasked with stopping him, Liberatore still owns every New Haven career and single-season scoring record en route to shattering many of the New England scoring marks set by former Quinnipiac star and New Haven coaching great Frank "Porky" Vieira.
Fifty years after his final game with the Chargers, his 3,176 points remain the all-time New England scoring record. Liberatore’s career marks include an average of 31.7 points per game, 7.8 rebounds, a .504 field goal percentage and a .791 free throw percentage.
Gary Liberatore is remembered every night that New Haven plays in Charger Gymnasium, where his #45 hangs in the rafters as the first and only number retired for a student-athlete in any sport in school history.
