PHOTO GALLERYOne of the finest three-point shooters in New Haven men's basketball history, Mike Grove tallied 251 career three-pointers from 1989-93, including a single-season record 100 treys in 1991-92. Named the 1993 Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the Hamden, Conn. native became the 23rd member of the Chargers' 1,000-point club on Feb. 22, 1992.
Despite missing a portion of his rookie season, Grove finished fourth on the team in scoring with 11.2 points per game. He led the team with a season-high 25 points in the first round of the New England Collegiate Conference tournament against Lowell. In the 1990-91 season, Grove averaged 11.5 points and 2.9 assists per game. He netted 41 three-pointers and built the foundation for two of the best seasons in Charger history.
As a junior, he more than doubled his career output with a record 100 three-pointers – an astonishing 29 more than the previous record holder. The point guard netted five or more three-pointers in nine games and sunk a season-high nine against New Hampshire College on Feb. 15, 1992. At the conclusion of his junior season, he was named to the NABC All-America honorable mention list, while also earning All-District accolades.
Named to the Division II Player of the Year watch list before the 1992-93 season, Grove concluded his career with a stellar shooting season that included career highs in field goals, rebounds, steals, points and shooting percentage. He amassed 540 points with a career-best 21.6 points per game. On Jan. 23, 1993, he scored a career-high 38 points against Le Moyne on 15-of-24 from the field and 6-of-13 from long range. He was named All-NECC Second Team.
With 251 career three-pointers, Grove's all-time record at UNH stood for more than two decades and he currently stands second. He also ranks eighth in three-point shooting percentage at 37.2 percent and 12th all-time in scoring at 1,589.
