The greatest rebounder in the history of New Haven men’s basketball, Phil Andros collected 1,732 boards from 1963-67.
The East Haven native also ranks 11th all-time in scoring for the Chargers, posting 1,627 career points, one of just four student-athletes with 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.
At the time, his 36 rebounds against Bryant on Feb. 23, 1966 stood as the NAIA single-game record. In addition to his career-record marks, Andros owns the top two single season spots for rebounding, as well as ranking seventh in a single season with 258 field goals (1965-66). On the career record board, he can also be found among the top shooters with his 53.8 percent shooting efforts good for eighth all-time.
Andros was a key member of the 1965-66 team that finished 29-2 and earned the program’s first trip to the national postseason. He was selected by the Chicago Bulls in the 11th round of the 1967 NBA Draft and was the last player cut from the roster prior to the 1967-68 season.
