One of the first two-sport superstars at New Haven, Diorio pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies after starring for the Chargers on the baseball diamond and helped lead the UNH men’s basketball team to the NAIA National Tournament in 1969.
As a pitcher, Dioro went 24-1 with a career 1.57 earned run average for the Chargers before being drafted by Philadelphia and making 25 appearances on a major league mound from 1973-74.
On the hardwood, he averaged 8.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game for New Haven while shooting better than 50 percent from the field. In total, seven of the eight Charger teams to feature Diorio qualified for postseason competition.
