Chargers Sweep Adelphi Behind 13 Kills from Caroline Martins

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The University of New Haven volleyball team (12-6, 7-1 NE-10) secured its second straight, and 10th of the season, three-set sweep, defeating Adelphi (25-19, 27-25, 25-19) on Tuesday night at The Center for Recreation and Sport. Leading the Chargers was Caroline Martins (Tres Pontas, Brazil) who finished with 13 kills, one of two players in double figures.

HIGHLIGHTS

·         The 13 kills for Martins is her fifth match in double figures and her third-straight with 10 or more. Joining her in leading the team was Meghan Kennelly (Detroit, Mich./Eisenhower) who finished with 11 kills.

·         Four other Chargers provided points on kills with Kristine Rios (Miami, Fla./Coral Reef) contributing seven and three other players all finishing with five kills each, Mallory Nowicki (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northview), Lexis Peterson (Windsor, N.Y./Windsor Central) and Alex Bussey (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy). Among all the hitters on the night, Peterson led the Chargers with a .455 hitting average with her five kills coming on 11 attacks without an error. Also hitting well was Bussey as her five kills came on 17 attempts with one error for a .235 average

·         As a team, New Haven combined for 46 kills with 24 errors in 148 attempts for a .149 average. The majority of those kills came in the second set where the Chargers combined for 20 total as they rebounded from an early 7-0 deficit to score the 27-25 victory.

·         Marshaling the Chargers offense on the night were a pair of setters, Rios who led the way with 19 assists and Annika Hacker (Bayreuth, Germany/Littleton (Colo.)) who added 15. The pair also put up double figures on the defensive end of the floor, securing a double double.

·         Leading the Blue and Gold defensively was freshman libero Charleigh Crews (Naples, Fla./Seacrest Country Day) who compiled 21 digs, her fourth match of the season with 20 or more. Joining her among four total Chargers with double figure digs was Rios (13), Hacker (12) and Kennelly (15).  

·         As a team, New Haven combined for five total blocks led by Bussey and Martins who each finished with a pair, while three other players, Rios, Kennelly and Hacker, all added an ace on the night.

The Chargers will close out a two-match road swing when they travel to Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. first serve at the SNHU Fieldhouse in Manchester, Conn.
