The student-athlete leadership and development program works in conjunction with the NCAA to provide student-athletes with the proper skills to reach their optimal potential in the classroom and on the playing field, but to prepare them for the biggest challenge of all - life after graduation.

It is designed to build philosophical foundations for the development of athletic programs, support a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes while encouraging personal growth and decision-making skills in order to develop and pursues career and life goals.

The components of the program reflect the six attributes that represent a DII institution which are: Passion, Balance, Service, Resourcefulness, Sportsmanship, and Learning. The programs provided for our Chargers will emphasize the following components: academics, athletics, personal development, career development and a commitment to service.

History of the Student-Athlete Leadership & Development (formerly the CHAMPS/Life Skills) Coalition
In 1991, the NCAA Foundation initiated efforts to create a total development program for student-athletes. Through the collaborative efforts of the NCAA Foundation and the Division 1A Athletic Directors' Association, the CHAMPS/Life Skills Program (Challenging Athletes' Minds for Personal Success) was created. Today, the NCAA Education Outreach staff oversees the development of the program, offering services, support and programs to participating institutions throughout the year. The CHAMPS/Life Skills Program is supported through the promotional and financial efforts of the NCAA Leadership Advisory Board and the NCAA national office.
