WEST HAVEN, Conn. -- University of New Haven Director of Athletics Deborah Chin announced the hiring of Drew Folmar as offensive coordinator for the Charger Football team. He begins his duties at UNH immediately, serving as an assistant to head coach Peter Rossomando.
Folmar brings over eleven years of coaching and playing experience at both the Division II and III levels. Prior to joining the UNH staff, from 2003 to 2006 Folmar served as the wide receivers coach at Millersville University. In 2007 he was promoted to serve as offensive coordinator for the Marauders under head coach Joe Trainer. While at Millersville, Folmar also was the team's strength and conditioning coordinator.
Prior to his time at Millersville, Folmar spent one year with the United States Merchant Marine Academy. He was the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach for a USMMA team that posted an 8-3 record. He was also part of the baseball staff, serving as an assistant coach.
“I feel very fortunate to have been able to hire a coach of Drew’s experience and reputation so late in the year," says Coach Rossomando. "His Division II experiences as both a player and a coach will be invaluable to our staff as we continue to build the program in anticipation of our first game in 2009.”
Prior to his coaching career, Folmar was a standout quarterback at Millersville, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education in 2001. He was a four-year starter and led the Marauders to a 30-12 during his playing career. Folmar was named All-Conference in each of his four seasons and served as team captain for two years. He was three-time PSAC Eastern Division First Team, two-time All-ECAC South First Team, and team MVP in 1997, 1999 and 2000.
In 2000 he was a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, given to the best Division II football player in the nation. As a sophomore in 1998, he was also a regional finalist for the award. In 1999, he guided Millersville to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II playoffs. He established 22 regular-season and 11 postseason records at Millersville and is the program's all-time leader in passing yards (9,903), total offense (10,105 yards), completions (760), pass attempts (1,241), touchdown passes (91) and passing efficiency (147.0 rating).
Following his senior season he stayed on with the program as a student assistant coach, working with both the quarterbacks and wide receivers.
"I am truly honored and excited about the opportunity to help bring back the proud tradition of New Haven football," Folmar said. "I know what that tradition is like, having played against New Haven three times as a player. Coach Rossomando and his staff have done a great job with the class coming and getting the program up and running. I am looking forward to working with Coach Rossamando and the great staff that he has put together."
Folmar led Millersville to a 19-18 home victory over UNH in 1998, his sophomore season. UNH defeated Millersville in West Haven in 1997 (53-10) and 1999 (38-35), the other two times Folmar played the Chargers.
Folmar has a four-year-old daughter, Macquarrie. Drew and his wife Heather reside in Hamden, Conn.
