(10-13-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell 3-1 Tuesday afternoon to the Dowling College Golden Knights at Kayo Field. With the loss the Chargers fall to 1-12 on the season, while Dowling improves to 9-3.
Dowling opened scoring in the 16th minute off a crossing pass and shot from just inside the 18-yard box. The Charger defense fended off eight more shots in the first half to keep the game within one score at the midway point.
Eight minutes after the second half began, the Golden Lions took a 2-0 lead when they netted a ball from inside the goalkeeper's box. The ball bounced around inside the back with a number of rebounds before the Golden Lions scored.
Just minutes later, the Chargers rallied with a goal by Jean Carlos Rafael. UNH forward Oren Corridon controlled the ball near the Dowling end line and made a cross pass to Rafael who netted his first goal of the season.
Despite three more shots in the second half by the Chargers, they could not register a second goal. Dowling concluded the scoring with an insurance goal in the 67th minute.
The Chargers trailed 22-5 in shot Tuesday and 4-3 in corner kicks. The Golden Lions also had a number of offside calls, 17 to be exact. UNH was called offside nine times.
UNH goalkeeper Jonathan Creem made eight saves, while the Dowling keeper stopped one shot. Rafael led New Haven with three shots, while Corridon added the other two.
The Chargers return to action on Saturday, October 17 when they travel to St. Anselm for a Northeast-10 Conference match at 3 p.m.
