Women's Soccer Races Past Pace 5-0

(10-14-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team defeated the visiting Pace University Setters 5-0 Wednesday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the win the Chargers improve to 7-6-3 overall and 4-6-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Setters fall to 1-12-1 overall and 1-6-1 in conference action.

It took the Chargers just 4:28 to score the eventual game-winning goal Wednesday. Emily Buckley-Matura gave UNH a 1-0 lead off a penalty kick. Buckley-Matura connected with Alexa DellaRocco later in the first half to give the Chargers a two-goal lead. The Chargers controlled most of the first period, which included a 13-2 advantage in shots.

New Haven sealed the win with three second half goals. Meabh De Burca scored her second goal of the season in the 50th minute, off the Chargers second penalty kick. DellaRocco gave UNH a 4-0 lead in the 58th minute off a third penalty kick, which was awarded after she was fouled inside the 18-yard box. The Chargers final goal came in the 75th minute when Marta Bertsos connected on her third goal of the season when she beat the Pace defense for a one-on-one shot with the Setters goalkeeper.

The Chargers held a commanding 26-4 lead in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Buckley-Matura led the Chargers with six shots, while DellaRocco and Holly Dawson both tallied five shots.

The Chargers return to action Saturday, October 17 when they host St. Anselm College at Kayo Field for Senior Day. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
