Women's Soccer Rallies in Overtime to Win 4-3 at Adelphi

(10-20-09) GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team rallied with three goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation and scored the game-winning goal in the 98th minute Tuesday night against Adelphi University. The Chargers defeated the Panthers 4-3 in New York. With the win the Chargers improve to 9-6-3, 6-6-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while Adelphi falls to 8-5-2, 6-5-2.

The Chargers allowed two first-half goals and then found themselves behind 3-0 when the Panthers scored again in the 68th minute.

At the 79:35 mark sophomore Alexa DellaRocco started a UNH scoring rally when she scored off a penalty kick. Just under three minutes later, Marta Bertsos scored an unassisted goal after a scramble in front of the Panthers' net.

Two minutes and 12-seconds later the Chargers evened the score at 3-3 when DellaRocco netted her second goal of the game and 12th of the season. She beat an Adelphi defender to force overtime.

After firing two shots in the first three minutes of overtime, Claire Siekaniec scored her first goal of the season when she beat the Adelphi goalkeeper with a shot out of reach over her head.

UNH held a 15-7 advantage in shots and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. DellaRocco tallied five shots, including four shots on goal to lead the Chargers. Bertsos added two shots on goal, while five others tallied one shot.

New Haven returns to action in their regular season finale on Saturday, October 24 when they travel to St. Michael's. Game time is set for 12 p.m.

Depending on other results this weekend and early next week, the Chargers are still alive in the race for a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference championship tournament.
