(10-24-09) COLCHESTER, Vt. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell 2-1 Saturday afternoon at St. Michael's College. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 1-16 overall and 0-11 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Purple Knights improve to 8-5-2 overall and 4-5-3 in the NE-10.
The first half was a midfield battle as the two teams combined for just three shots on goal. Joe D'Antonio got a look at the net, but could not get in past St. Michael's goalie, Jason Burnett. The game headed into the half with a scoreless draw, 0-0.
New Haven finally broke the deadlock just 1:58 into the second half. Oren Corridon picked up his third goal of the season and gave the Chargers a 1-0 lead. D'Antonio recorded the helper.
UNH defense staved off the Purple Knight offense until the 57th minute, when Rondel Ward found the back of the net to tie the score, 1-1.
The score remained a 1-1 tie into the 74th minute when Saint Michael's added the eventual game winner off the foot of Rob Pierce.
Nick Pezzente, Steven Gennuso and D'Antonio all recorded two shots, while goalkeepers J.J. Comeau and Jonathan Creem each spent a half in the net, recording one and two saves, respectively.
The Chargers return to the pitch this Wednesday, Oct. 28 for their final 2009 appearance. UNH will host NE-10 foe American International for the season closer. Prior to the game New Haven will honor its two seniors - Trent McCaskill and Oren Corridon. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m., at Kayo Field.
