(10-03-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team fell to Stonehill College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Kayo Field. A goal by Kelsey Mahoney in the 75th minute of play was all the Skyhawks needed to defeat the Chargers. New Haven slips to 6-5-2 overall and 3-5-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while Stonehill improves to 5-7 overall and 3-7 in the NE-10.
The first half saw both teams have scoring opportunities, but the game remained a draw until the 75th minute. A rebound in the box met the feet of Kelsey Mahoney. Mahoney then took several dribbles and connected to find the back of the net, putting the Skyhawks up 1-0. The game remained 1-0 until the final whistle.
Despite holding a 12-9 shot advantage on the afternoon, including a 9-3 advantage in the second half, the Chargers were unable to convert offensive opportunities into goals. Emily Buckley-Matura, Holly Dawson and Lucy Francisco led the Chargers with three shots a piece.
Kim Taylor recorded two saves, while Stonehill goalie Sarah Hickey nabbed four.
The Chargers are back in action on Tuesday to host Le Moyne. Game time is set for 4 p.m. at Kayo Field.
