(10-09-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell 2-1 Friday afternoon to Merrimack College at Kayo Field. The Chargers drop to 1-11 overall and 0-10 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Warriors improve to 7-4-1 overall and 5-2 in the NE-10.
Merrimack forward Robbie Sabadoz scored first in Friday's game to give the Warriors the lead. He received the ball on a through pass and netted a shot in the 33rd minute.
After halftime, the Chargers evened the score in the 48th minute when Nick Dionne narrowly touched a 25-yard direct kick by Austin Coleman, who was credited with the assist.
The Chargers controlled the ball for most of the remaining second half, but the Warriors needed just one opportunity. In the 88th minute, Sabadoz put Merrimack ahead 2-1 with a shot from inside the 18-yard box. In the final 2:30 the Chargers could not mount a comeback opportunity.
Joel Rodriguez led the team with two shots, while five other Chargers tallied one attempt. Between the posts, Jonathan Creem make six saves for New Haven.
Merrimack held a 15-7 advantage in shots and an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. Each team attempted four corner kicks and tallied 11 fouls.
The Chargers return to action Tuesday, October 13 when they host Dowling College at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
