Yellow Jackets Too Much for Chargers in Springfield

(11-18-09) SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The University of New Haven men's basketball fell 80-65 Wednesday night at American International College. The Chargers fall to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Yellow Jackets improve to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the NE-10.

The Chargers fell down early in the game, but kept in close throughout the first half. After trailing by seven points at the 7:28 mark, UNH went on a 9-0 run to take an 18-16 lead with 4:44 remaining in the first half. The Yellow Jackets regained the lead and led by as many as five with 2:47 left in the opening half. James Carr hit a free throw down the stretch and cut the AIC halftime lead to 24-20.

The Charges kept it close in the opening three minutes of the second half, but the Yellow Jackets took over and 12-4 run starting at the 17:25 mark to take a 10-point lead. AIC pushed its lead to 16 three different times, before eventually sealing the 80-65 victory.

Senior guard Darryl Greene led the Chargers with 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting. Senior Kelvin Jackson added nine points and nine rebounds, while freshman Sean Harris finished with seven points and six assists.

The Chargers shot 53.1 percent from the floor and 25 percent from beyond the arc, while the Yellow Jackets shot 46.4 percent from the floor and 29.2 percent from three-point range. The Chargers had 22 turnovers, while AIC suffered 15 turnovers.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, November 24 when they host Assumption College at Charger Gymnasium. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
