Chargers Fall in Non-Conference Match at Goldey Beacom

(12-21-09) PIKE CREEK, Del. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team fell 84-73 Monday night at Goldey Beacom College in Delaware. The Chargers fall to 0-8 with the non-conference loss, while the Lightning improve to 7-2.

After falling down early, the Chargers rebounded in the first half with an 8-0 run near the end of the half to take a lead with 4:51 left in the first half. UNH held on to the lead for the remaining of the first half and held a 40-37 lead at the break.

The Lightning went on a 15-4 run to open the second half, grabbing the lead immediately after intermission. Goldey Beacom improved its lead to as many as 10 points, before the Chargers went on a 10-1 run to tie the game at 69-69 with 2:05 left in the second half. After the Lightning hit a layup, the Chargers a missed a jumper to give Goldey Beacom a two-point lead. UNH missed a few shots down the stretch and the Lightning defense caused a few UNH turnovers to seal the victory.

The Lightning had just 12 fouls called on them, while UNH was called for 25 fouls, including three players who fouled out with five fouls. Goldey Beacom out-rebounded the Chargers 42-30 and held a 37-10 advantage in free throw attempts.

Cassius Chaney led the Chargers with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Sean Harris and Darryl Greene each added 15 points, while Robert Jamerson added 11 points.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, December 29 at the Adelphi University Tournament. UNH opens at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday against Nyack College.
