(12-08-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference match up with Adelphi University 49-59 Tuesday night at Charger Gymnasium. The Chargers fall to 0-7 overall and 0-6 in the NE-10, while the Panthers improve to 7-1 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
The Chargers opened Tuesday night's game by taking a four-point lead in the opening five minutes. The two teams went nearly point-for-point for the next 10 minutes before the Panthers went on a 4-0 run to take a five-point lead, 19-14, with 4:59 left in the first half. UNH scored a pair of baskets to cut the lead back to one, but the Panthers with close the half with a three-point lead, 25-22.
Adelphi immediately opened a large lead in the first minutes of the second half, going on a 13-2 run over the first six and a half minutes of the second half. However, the Chargers, behind senior forward Kelvin Jackson started chipping away at the Panthers lead, eventually cutting it to six points, 50-44, with 3:38 left in the half. The Chargers made baskets in the final two minutes, but the Panthers missed just one free throw to ensure the victory.
Jackson finished the night with a career-high 20 points on 8-of-11 from the floor and 4-of-9 from the charity stripe. He added five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Cassius Chaney added 17 points and eight rebounds.
The Chargers struggled from beyond the arc Tuesday, going 0-for-14. However, UNH held a 39.2 percent to 38.8 percent advantage in field goal shooting. New Haven also out-rebounded the Panthers 35-33.
