BOX SCORE (08-27-09) WATERBURY, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team defeated the Post University Eagles 6-0 Thursday afternoon in Waterbury, Conn. The game was the season opener for both teams.
In the eighth minute, UNH freshman Lucy Francisco gave the Chargers to go ahead goal off a shot which bounced off the top post and then into the net. Just under 10-minutes later, junior Emily Buckley-Matura put her team up 2-0 when she netted a goal off her own rebound. In the 30th minute, the Chargers added their third goal of the game when Buckley-Matura scored her second of the game.
UNH let one more opportunity slip by in the closing minutes of the half, but performed well with a 12-6 shot advantage in the opening half.
Seven minutes into the second period, Buckley-Matura scored her final goal of the game, giving UNH a 4-0 lead. Sophomore Alexa DellaRocco then sealed the game with a pair of goals in the 68th and 69th minutes.
Sophomore Kim Taylor recorded the shutout between the posts for the Chargers. She stopped three shots, including two in the second half.
With three goals already, Buckley-Matura already scored half as many as she did during the '08 campaign, while DellaRocco already doubled her total from a season ago.
The Chargers return to action on Sunday, August 30 at 1 p.m. when they host Molloy College in their season home-opener.
