Men's Soccer Narrowly Falls to Bentley in Season Opener

Box Score

(08-29-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell 3-2 to Bentley University Saturday afternoon at Kayo Field. It was the first game of the season for both teams.

After nine minutes and 14 seconds the Chargers found themselves down 1-0 when the Falcons crossing pass from 20 yards out found the back of the net. Bentley took a 2-0 lead in the 31st minute, a lead they would take into halftime.

After some halftime adjustments, the Chargers netted their first goal of the game when freshman Roberto Novoa fired a shot from nearly 25 yards. The Falcons held onto their 2-1 until the 74th minute when they scored their third of the game off an indirect kick.

Five minutes later, the Chargers cut the lead back to one when Steven Gennuso netted a header off a crossing pass from Nick Dionne.

The Chargers best opportunity to push the score even came in the 80th minute when Anthony Romano had a well fired shot sail wide right. Romano also had two other shots go wide right in the final four minutes.

The Chargers trailed 13-8 in shots for the game, but held a 7-4 advantage in the second half. The Falcons attempted 10 corner kicks, all in the first half, while the Chargers tallied four attempts.

"The first 45 minutes we failed to compete which put us down 2-0," said head coach Josh Krusewski after the game. "In the second half we showed the character and work rate that we expect to see from this point forward."

The Chargers' goalkeeper, Jonathan Creem, registered six saves in the game. Gennuso led the Chargers with four shots, while Romano added three.

The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, September 2 when they host Concordia (N.Y.) at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
