BOX SCORE

Box Score

(08-30-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team defeated the Molloy College Lions 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the win the Chargers improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Lions fall to 0-3.

After a fairly quiet opening 20-minutes, New Haven freshman Lucy Francisco scored her second game-winning goal of the season when she put a 20-yard shot over the Molloy goalkeeper's head at the 29-minute mark. Francisco also scored the Chargers first goal on Wednesday in a 6-0 victory over Post University.

Neither team mounted very many offensive opportunities in the remaining 15 minutes of the first half. However, the Chargers had three offside calls in the final 13 minutes that squashed any opportunities for a second score.

The second half looked very similar to the opening period Sunday. The ball was played back and forth in the midfield for a majority of the final 45-minutes. The Lions attempted the first shot of the half in the 52nd minute, and the Chargers first came in the 59th minute. UNH opened a 2-0 off an Alexa DellaRocco goal in the 77th minute. DellaRocco found the rebounded ball after a shot by Emily Buckley-Matura and a save by the Lions' goalkeeper.

In the closing 13-minutes neither team mounted a significant attacking opportunity. The Chargers grabbed their second shutout of the 2009 season.

UNH held a slight 7-6 advantage in shots and a 4-2 advantage in saves. New Haven was offside seven times, while the Lions were called offside three times.

Kim Taylor stopped four shots and earned her second shutout of the season in the goal for the Chargers. Buckley-Matura and DellaRocco each tallied two shots, while Nicole Grimaldi, Marta Bertsos and Francisco each tallied one shot.

The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, September 2 when they travel to Southern Connecticut State and open their 2009 Northeast-10 Conference schedule. Game time at Jess Dow Field is set for 4 p.m.
