(09-10-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team defeated Georgian Court University 5-1 Thursday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the win the Chargers improve to 5-1, while the Lions fall to 1-3 on the season.

New Haven opened the scoring on Thursday with a goal in the 20th minute by freshman Lucy Francisco. She pushed the shot by the Georgian Court goalkeeper after receiving a pass from Nicole Grimaldi.

The Chargers added one more score before halftime, in the 24th minute, off an Emily Buckley-Matura shot which made its way to the back of the net. She received a through pass from Francisco.

After half, the Chargers lid up the 65th through 70th minutes with three goals. Buckley-Matura scored her second of the game and seventh of the season off a pass from Carly Yamauchi. Marta Bertsos scored New Haven's fourth goal, her first of the season, at the 68:15 mark, giving UNH a 4-0 lead. Her score came off a pass from Francisco, who tallied her second assist of the game. The Chargers' final score came off a shot by Francisco who scored her fourth of the season and sixth point of the game. Buckley-Matura dished out the assist to the freshman.

The Lions' only score came in the 72nd minute when they netted an unassisted goal to break the UNH shutout.

The Chargers held a 19-8 advantage in shots, and held the Lions to two shots on goal. Each team tallied one corner kick, while UNH was called for 14 fouls, compared to nine for the Lions.

Francisco led the Chargers with two goals and two assists, while Buckley-Matura tallied two scores and one assist. Kim Taylor played 72 minutes in the goal for New Haven and recorded her fifth win of the season.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday, September 12 when they host UMass Lowell for Alumni Day at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
