(09-02-09) NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team defeated Southern Connecticut State University Owls 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at Jess Dow Field. The Chargers improve to 3-0 on the season and open the Northeast-10 Conference with a victory. The Owls fall to 2-1 overall (0-1 NE-10).
In the 107th minute, New Haven sophomore forward Alexa DellaRocco lifted the Chargers to their first win over Southern Connecticut State since 1998. The Chargers only other victory over the Owls came in 1996. DellaRocco received a pass from Meabh de Burca at the 106:21 mark of the game.
The game was played even through 90 minutes. The Chargers tallied eight shots, while the Owls registered 11 shots through the first two periods. In the first overtime, Southern was the only team that had an opportunity, which came in the 95th minute. UNH goalkeeper, Kim Taylor, stopped the shot and preserved the shutout. DellaRocco's goal was the only shot of the second overtime.
Freshmen Lucy Francisco and Lauren Primovic led the Chargers with three and two shots, respectively. Taylor stopped six shots and recorded her third consecutive shutout to open the 2009 season.
The Chargers return to action on Saturday, September 5 when they travel to Bentley University for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
