(09-20-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team fell 5-0 Sunday afternoon to No. 22 Franklin Pierce University. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 5-4 overall and 2-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Ravens improve to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the NE-10.
Franklin Pierce opened scoring in the ninth minute on Sunday with a crossing pass and shot from seven-yards. Before the Chargers attempted their first shot of the match, the Ravens added their second goal in the 25th minute.
The Chargers first shot came in the 33rd minute by freshman Shannon Morales, who had the shot blocked by a Franklin Pierce defender.
The Ravens took a 3-0 lead with just over three-minutes remaining in the first half when Gabriela Demoner connected on a free kick from 25 yards out.
Franklin Pierce added two goals in the second half to take a 5-0 lead and eventual victory.
Each team tallied four second-half shots, but Franklin Pierce held a 7-1 advantage in the first half. The Ravens attempted three corner kicks, compared to two by the Chargers.
Holly Dawson tallied two shots for the Chargers, while Lucy Francisco, Marta Bertsos and Morales rounded out New Haven's attempts.
The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, September 22 when they travel to American International College. The game time was originally scheduled for 7 p.m., but that was changed to 4 p.m. last week.
