Men's Soccer Suffers Close 4-3 Loss to Southern

(09-22-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell 4-3 Tuesday afternoon to Southern Connecticut State University at Kayo Field. The Chargers drop to 1-6 overall and 0-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Owls improve to 5-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in conference action.

The Chargers fell down 1-0 after SCSU scored an unassisted goal in the 16th minute. Despite numerous shots, neither team scored again until the second half. The Owls rattled off six more shots, including two on goal, while the Chargers tallied three shots on goal in the opening half.

Six goals were scored in the second half. Southern scored their second of the game in the 52nd minute and took a 3-0 lead at the 55:36 mark. The Chargers got on the board and cut the Owls' lead to 3-1 12-second later when Anthony Romano netted his first goal of the season.

Nearly 10-minutes later, at the 64:47 mark, Oren Corridon brought UNH within one goal with his second goal of the season. Before the Chargers scored their third goal, Southern added the eventual game-winning goal in the 74th minute. Eight minutes later, Joe D'Antonio scored his first collegiate goal when he beat the SCSU goalkeeper with a shot that rattled off the right post and bounced in the net.

In the last eight and a half minutes, the Chargers tallied one corner kick and one scoring opportunity, but time ran out as they were attempting to even the score.

Sophomore Steven Gennuso led the Chargers with four shots and two shots on goal. D'Antonio added two shots and five other Chargers added one shot each. In the net for the Chargers, Jonathan Creem tallied five saves and faced 18 shots.

New Haven returns to action on Sunday, September 27 when they host No. 7 Southern New Hampshire University. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
