(09-22-09) SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team defeated American International College 1-0 Tuesday afternoon in Springfield. Junior Emily Buckley-Matura scored New Haven's game-winner with 3:59 remaining in regulation. The Chargers break a three-game skid, and improve to 6-4 overall and 3-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 4-4-1 overall and 1-4-1 in the NE-10.
With just over 86 minutes gone in the game, Buckley-Matura received a through ball pass from Lucy Francisco and got the ball past the AIC goalkeeper for the only score in the game. UNH tallied seven other shots in the second half, including two shots on goal. However, the Yellow Jackets held a 9-8 advantage in second-half shots. Neither team attempted another shot in the last four minutes, giving New Haven the victory.
American International opened the game with eight first-half shots and held New Haven to just two attempts in the first half. UNH goalkeeper Kim Taylor stopped three shots in the opening period, including a header attempt in the 10th minute.
Alexa DellaRocco and Francisco led the Chargers with three shots, while Buckley-Matura added two in the win. Taylor made seven saves in the game and helped the Charger defense to their fifth shutout of the season.
American International tallied 20 fouls, while UNH registered nine. The Yellow Jackets also led 5-0 in corner kick attempts and 17-10 in shots.
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, September 26 when they travel to Southern New Hampshire University for a 1 p.m. match.
