(09-27-09) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell 4-0 Sunday afternoon to nationally ranked No. 7 Southern New Hampshire University at Kayo Field. The loss pushes the Chargers to 1-7 overall and 0-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Penmen improve to 8-1-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the NE-10.
The Penmen opened scoring in the third minute when a through ball made its way through the UNH defense eventually the back of the net after a few touches by Penmen forward Adrian Schippers.
Just over seven minutes later, at the 9:33 mark, Schippers scored his second goal of the game when he intercepted a UNH pass and one touched the ball over UNH goalkeeper, Jonathan Creem's groves.
SNHU added their third goal in the 42nd minute and then Matt Sarazin tallied the Chargers' only shot on goal of the game in the 43rd minute.
The Penmen improved upon their 3-0 halftime lead, with a goal in the 53rd minute. For the remaining 27 minutes the game was played mostly in the midfield. Except for a few corner kicks, neither team mounted many attacking opportunities.
The Chargers finished with five total shots, while the Penmen tallied 13 shots (six shots on goal). Southern New Hampshire attempted nine corner kicks, compared to five by the Chargers.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, September 30 when they travel to take on C.W. Post. Game time is set for 4 p.m. in Brookville, N.Y.
