Women's Soccer Continues Winning Ways, Defeats Bentley 2-0

(09-05-09) WALTHAM, Mass. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team defeated Bentley University 2-0 Saturday afternoon in their fourth-straight win to open the 2009 season. The win gives the Chargers their second Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) victory in as many tries, while the Falcons fall to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the NE-10.

First year junior Meabh de Burca netted her first goal of the season in the 42nd minute to give the Chargers their fourth victory of the season Saturday. She received a pass in the box from freshman Shannon Morales who registered her first point of her collegiate career.

The Falcons saw two shots go wide in the final minutes of the first half, as the Chargers held on to their 1-0 lead at halftime.

Three Alexa DellaRocco shots in the first 20-minutes of the second half were saved by the Benltey goalkeeper. Freshman Lucy Francisco added a shot on goal at the 80:50 mark before Emily Buckley-Matura netted her foruth goal of the season off a pass from Francisco.

The Falcons recorded one more opportunity in the 89th minute when a shot was blocked, but for the most part the Charger defense kept the Falcons at bay.

UNH held a slight 16-14 advantage in shots, while leading 4-0 in corner kick attempts. The Chargers were called for just two fouls, while the Falcons were called for eight.

de Burca tallied five shots to lead the Chargers, while DellaRocco and Morales each recorded three shots.

In her fourth consecutive shutout to open the 2009 season, sophomore goalkeeper Kim Taylor stopped two shots.

The Chargers return to action on Tuesday, September 8 when they host Assumption College at 4 p.m. at Kayo Field.
