(01-16-10) EASTON, Mass. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game at Stonehill College Saturday afternoon, 58-72. With the loss the Chargers fall to 2-13 overall and 2-9 in the NE-10, while the Skyhawks improve to 13-3 overall and 10-1 in conference play.
After falling behind early, UNH rebounded and took the lead after a 7-0 run midway through the opening half. The Skyhawks, however, answered and went on a 12-0 run to take a 27-17 lead just minutes later. After hitting a three-pointer and a free throw, the Chargers were once again on the losing end of a 12-0 run. The Skyhawks headed to the locker room leading by 18 points, 39-21.
After keeping the score within 20 points for most of the second half, the Chargers cut the Skyhawks lead to 13, 51-38, with 11:56 remaining. Stonehill then went on a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to take a commanding 65-40 lead with 5:45 left. With a mix of points in the final minutes, the Chargers cut the Skyhawks lead to 14 at the conclusion.
Freshman C.J. Ruskay led the Chargers with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting in the game. Cassius Chaney added 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Kelvin Jackson scored nine points.
The Chargers shot 41.1 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc. Stonehill connected on 50 percent of its shots and 20 percent from three-point territory.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, January 20 when they travel to St. Michael's College. Tip off in Colchester, Vt. is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
