Men's Basketball Downs Owls

(01-02-10) NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men’s basketball team defeated Southern Connecticut State University Saturday afternoon, 63-58. With the win, the Chargers improve to 1-10 overall, 1-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Owls fall to 2-10 overall, 1-6 in the Northeast-10 Conference.

In the opening half, the Chargers took an eight point lead at the 12:49 mark on a three-pointer by C.J. Ruskay. The Owls came within 3 at the 11:58 mark on two free throws from Tobin Carberry. New Haven continued to attack offensively and held their largest lead of the game at the 3:08 mark, 39-20. The owls cut the lead Charger lead to 15 going into halftime.

For the half, Darryl Greene led UNH with 13 points, while seven other Chargers tallied at least two points. New Haven shot 55.2% from the floor, while SCSU shot 30%.

In the first five minutes of the second half, both teams only scored a basket a piece. After being down by 15, the Owl’s gradually cut the Charger lead to just four at the 3:49 mark. The Chargers held on and made it an eight point game at the 2:28 mark on a layup by Robert Jamerson. SCSU continued to attack the Charger defense and found themselves within two with 39 seconds left. New Haven held on, hitting three foul shots in the last 20 seconds of the game, to win their first game of the season.

Greene led all scorers with 21 points and two assists. Jamerson and Cassius Chaney tallied nine points apiece. The Chargers shot 44.4 percent from the floor, while the Owls shot 36.2 percent.

The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, January 6 when they host Bentley University. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. at Charger Gymnasium.
