Second Half Surge Pushes Purple Knights Over Chargers

(01-20-10) COLCHESTER, Vt. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team dropped a Northeast-10 Conference game to St. Michael's College, 66-72, Wednesday night in Vermont. The Chargers fall to 2-14 overall and 2-10 in the NE-10, while the Purple Knights improve to 8-8 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

The two teams started Wednesday's game by exchanging the lead throughout the first 10 minutes. St. Michael's eventually took control of the half with an 11-2 run between the 10-minute and 5-minute marks to take a 12 point lead with 5:21 remaining in the half. The Chargers cut the Purple Knights lead to six at the half, 37-31.

New Haven's Darryl Greene led all scorers with 13 points in the first half. UNH shot 48.3 percent from the floor, while the Purple Knights connected on a remarkable 62.5 percent.

St. Michael's immediately improved upon its lead after halftime. A Purple Knights three-pointer with 17:03 left gave St. Michael's a 16-point lead, its largest lead of the game. New Haven then started to cut away at St. Michael's lead. Jeremy Williams cut the Purple Knights' lead to single digits with a layup at the 7:40 mark. At the end of a 17-4 UNH run, Greene scored a layup at the 4:04 mark to bring the Chargers within one point, 61-62. Turnovers and missed baskets haunted the Chargers in the final minutes as St. Michael's went on to win its third straight.

New Haven finished shooting 48.2 percent from the floor, while the Purple Knight made 59.6 percent of their shots. UNH trailed 26-31 in rebounds, but turned the ball over just nine times, compared to 12 by St. Michael's.

Greene led the Chargers with a game-high 27 points, while Robert Jamerson added 17 points and four rebounds. Cassius Chaney tallied 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Chargers return to action on Saturday, January 23 when they host St. Anselm College at Charger Gymnasium.
