Stellmacher Buzzer Beater Leads UNH Past SNHU in Overtime

(01-26-10) MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team defeated Southern New Hampshire University 67-65 Tuesday night in overtime off a last-second bucket by senior Dominique Stellmacher. With the win, the Chargers improve to 9-10 overall (7-7 NE-10), while the Penmen fall to 10-11 overall (6-8 NE-10).

With six tied scores in the opening half, UNH and Southern New Hampshire played a very closely contested first half. The Penmen ended the half with an 11-6 run and led 31-26 at halftime.

SNHU opened a six-point lead early in the second half, but the Chargers tied the game at 42-42 with 13:29 left. UNH took the lead minutes later and led by as many as five, 57-52, with 1:30 left in regulation. The Penmen rebounded with the final five unanswered points to send the game into overtime.

For the 11th time in the game, the two teams found themselves tied at 63-63 with 2:01 left in overtime. SNHU then scored a layup to take a two-point lead. Senior guard Helin Marte then connected on a pair of free throws to tie the game at 65-65 with 50 seconds remaining. Each team missed shots in the final seconds, but the Penmen gained possession after a UNH miss with six seconds remaining. Five seconds later, Yasmin Itheir-Vicenty stole the ball at half court with 0.6 seconds on the clock. After a timeout, the Chargers set up the winning alley-oop pass from freshman Jasmine Hardy to senior Dominique Stellmacher who found herself open under the basket laying in the winning points.

Stellmacher finished with 22 points in the game on 10-of-25 from the field. Marte added a career-high 26 points on 7-of-16 from the field and a perfect 12-of-12 from the foul line. The senior added 13 rebounds, two assists and one steal in 44 minutes Tuesday.

UNH held a 45-42 rebounding advantage, but SNHU held a 10.5 percent advantage in shooting percentage.

New Haven returns to the court on Saturday, January 30 when they host Merrimack College at Charger Gymnasium. Saturday is Sickle Cell Awareness Day at Charger Gymnasium as well as a toy drive for the Yale-New Haven Toy Closet. Fans that bring a toy receive free admission.
