Men's Soccer Defeated by STAC in Non-Conference Match

Box Score

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss Tuesday afternoon to Saint Thomas Aquinas College at Kayo Field. With the loss, the Chargers fall to 4-8-1 overall, while the Spartans improve to 10-1-1 on the season.

Through much of the first half the game featured a stalemate with much of the possession taking place in the midfield. However the visiting Spartans put an end to the scoreless draw in the 41st minute of action. Remmington Lee headed a shot towards net requiring a quick reaction from goalkeeper Jonathan Creem. The ball deflected right to a wide open Joseph Connolly who headed the ball across the goal line for a 1-0 lead.

Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the first half and for the first 25 minutes of the second half. STAC would eventually take a 2-0 lead off an unassisted goal in the 71st minute. Renan Lopes scored off a crossing all which he put into the back of the net.

The Chargers wasted no time to answer the Spartans second goal, as Matt Sarrazin netted his second goal of the season. The senior’s shot from 30 yards out was deflected on its way to the net by a defender and then dribbled into the goal, bringing the Chargers within one score.

Both teams buckled down for the remaining 20 minutes and neither mounted very much pressure on goal. The Chargers had two shots, while the Spartans attempted one in the final minutes.

Sarrazin led the Chargers with three shots, while four other players added one shot apiece. Jonathan Creem made five saves for the Chargers in the net. New Haven trailed 16-7 in shots, while STAC also led 6-3 in corner kicks.

New Haven returns to action on Saturday, October 16 when the team plays host to Saint Anselm College. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Kayo Field.
