WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven women’s soccer team was defeated by No. 1 nationally ranked Saint Rose by the final score of 5-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the loss the Chargers dropped to 6-6-2 overall and 4-4-2 in Northeast-10 Conference competition. The Golden Knights improved to 14-0 overall and 11-0 in the league.
The Chargers raced out to a quick start, nearly producing the game’s first goal in the opening five minutes of play. Lauren Primovic collected the ball on the right side of the field and whipped in a cross to the penalty area. Lucy Francisco darted to the near post and directed a header towards net, but couldn’t provide enough power to beat the Golden Knights’ goalkeeper.
In the 21st minute of action, the Northeast-10 Conference’s top offense struck first on a corner kick. Christina Cuffari curled in a cross to the back post where Sydney Bond hit a powerful header past Kim Taylor for a 1-0 advantage. Just two minutes after that, Amanda Deck gave the Golden Knights a 2-0 lead when she slammed home a shot from inside the penalty area.
The Chargers nearly got one back in the closing minutes as Meabh De Burca created a chance from 25 yards out. Unfortunately De Burca’s blast sailed a few inches over the crossbar and out for a goal kick. At the end of 45 minutes, Saint Rose took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
After the intermission the Golden Knights’ offense came back to life early on in the second stanza. Amanda Deck scored the team’s third goal (her second of the game) on a shot from 18 yards out to the upper left corner and was followed a few minutes later by Sidney Bond’s second goal of the game on another header. Saint Rose grasped a commanding 4-0 lead.
Saint Rose added one more in the waning minutes completing a 5-0 shutout. Taylor registered seven saves on goal for the Chargers, while Deanna Esposito made two stops for the visiting Golden Knights.
New Haven returns to action on Saturday, October 16th for a conference match against Stonehill College. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
