EASTON, Mass. – The University of New Haven women’s soccer team went on the road to Stonehill College and edged out a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon. Goalkeeper Kim Taylor registered her sixth shutout of the season as the Chargers’ playoff hopes are still intact.
With the win the Chargers improved to 7-6-2 overall on the season and 5-5-2 in Northeast-10 Conference competition. The Skyhawks dropped to 8-6-1 overall and 6-5-1 in the league.
After a scoreless first half of action where Stonehill grasped a 9-3 advantage in shots, the Chargers’ offense picked up greatly after the intermission. The Chargers edged the Skyhawks in shots (4-3) in the second stanza, including one shot that found the back of the net. In the 82nd minute of play, freshman Monica Yanez score what proved to be the game-winner when she slammed home a pass from Meabh De Burca. Yanez’s fourth goal of the season granted the Chargers an impressive win within the conference.
Taylor and the Chargers’ defense bounced back with a stellar performance behind the ball. Taylor recorded five saves in the outing, increasing her season total to 81.
New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, October 19 for a conference showdown against LeMoyne College. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
