WORCESTER, Mass. – Junior Ali Espanol of the University of New Haven women’s soccer team notched the game-winning goal in overtime, sending the Chargers past Assumption College 1-0 at the Multi-Sport Stadium in Worcester, Mass. After 99 minutes of scoreless soccer, Espanol broke the deadlock on a breakaway goal for the exciting victory.
With the win, the Chargers improved to 4-4-2 overall on the season and 3-3-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Greyhounds dropped to 2-7-1 overall and 2-6 in league play.
UNH controlled a slim 6-4 advantage in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks in the first half, but could not get on the scoreboard. Defensively, Kim Taylor made one save to shutout the Greyhounds in the opening stanza. After 45 minutes of play, the score remained 0-0.
After halftime, the pace picked up considerably as the second half featured a combined seven more shots than the first period. New Haven bombarded Assumption’s defense with 11 shots, but once again failed to beat the keeper. As a result, for the fourth time this season the Chargers would need overtime to decide a winner.
UNH raced out to a quick start in overtime, generating two shots in the first seven minutes. On the third shot, Espanol took matters into her own hands with a little help from Holly Dawson and beat the Greyhounds’ goalkeeper on a breakaway. On the play, Espanol collected her first goal of the season and Dawson dished out her second assist, propelling the Chargers to the road victory.
Taylor was solid between the posts, registering five saves for her fifth clean sheet of the season. Lauren Keating made 12 saves for the hosting Greyhounds.
New Haven returns to action on Tuesday, October 5th when they play host to Dowling College at Kayo Field. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
