Men’s Soccer Stays Alive; Blanks Saint Michael’s, 2-0

Box Score

WEST HAVEN, Conn. – Steven Gennuso and Joel Rodriguez led the way offensively on Sunday afternoon, as the University of New Haven men’s soccer team continued its late season run with a 2-0 victory over Saint Michael’s College at Kayo Field. With the win, the Chargers improved to 6-9-1 overall and 5-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Purple Knights dropped to 7-5-3 overall, 4-4-3 in the league.

In the first half of action, the Chargers managed to control much of the possession, leading to a 6-3 advantage in shots. With seven minutes remaining before the break, Steven Gennuso granted New Haven a 1-0 lead with his first goal of the season. Gennuso slammed home a rebound goal in the 38th minute, proving to be the lone goal in the opening stanza. As the halftime whistle sounded, the Chargers carried a one goal lead into the locker rooms.

After the intermission, the Chargers offense wasted very little time picking up where they left off in the first half. Less than five minutes into the second frame, a pair of defenders created the game’s second goal. Hector Pommills found some space inside the 18-yard box and found Joel Rodriguez in the middle, who hammered home his first goal of the season. The tally concluded the scoring column and a 2-0 victory for the Chargers.

J.J. Comeau was stellar in net for New Haven, making four saves all in the second half. Comeau has now posted back-to-back shutouts in his last two outings.

The Chargers moved into a two-way tie for eighth place in the conference standings with the result. Top eight teams will advance to the NE-10 Tournament.

New Haven returns to action on Friday, October 29 when the Chargers take on UMass-Lowell at Kayo Field. UNH will honor its senior class members prior to kickoff at 2 p.m.
