Chargers Put On Senior Day Show, Defeat Pace 60-57

(02-20-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball held on and defeated Pace University 60-57 Saturday afternoon at Charger Gymnasium. With the win the Chargers improve to 5-20 overall and 5-16 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Setters fall to 10-16 overall and 8-13 in the NE-10.

New Haven came out very strong in the opening minutes of the game, scoring 17 of the first 27 points. With 5:05 left in the half, the Setters cut the UNH lead to three, 28-25. The Chargers then went on a 9-0 run to open a 12-point, 37-25, lead with 2:45 left in the half. Pace managed to cut the lead to eight at the break.

Pace gradually worked the Chargers lead down and tied the game at 44-44 with 12:40 left in the second half. The Setters eventually took the lead with just over 11 minutes with a jumper, giving them a 48-47 lead. For the last 10 minutes the teams exchanged the lead a number of times. After a Robert Jamerson free throw gave UNH a 56-55 lead, Pace connected on a jumper and pulled ahead 57-56. UNH scored the final three points and earned the win.

UNH shot 33.9 percent from the floor, while holding the Setters to 30.9 percent shooting. UNH also out-rebounded the Setters 50-47. 

Saturday was Senior Day at Chargers Gymnasium and the Chargers' three seniors put up impressive numbers. Guard Darryl Greene (Clinton, Md./Bishop McNamara ) scored nine points and grabbed three rebounds, Kelvin Jackson scored 17 points and grabbed 10 boards, while Chaney scored 15 and added 15 rebounds.

New Haven hosts Merrimack College on Monday, February 22 in a rescheduled game from earlier in the season. The game will be the final home game of the season for the Chargers and is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.
