(02-03-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's basketball team fell 57-64 Wednesday night at Charger Gymnasium. With the loss the Chargers fall to 2-18 overall and 2-14 in the Northeast-10 Conference. AIC improves to 10-11 overall and 8-8 in the NE-10.
UNH opened an early lead against the Yellow Jackets and led by five points, 9-4, just over four minutes into the first half. Over the next 10 minutes, the Chargers improved their lead and with a three-point play by Cassius Chaney at the 6:05 mark, the Chargers took a seven-point, 25-18 lead. In the final minutes, the Yellow Jackets would cut the UNH lead to five, 28-23, prior to halftime.
AIC immediately cut into the Chargers' lead during the opening minutes of the second half. The Yellow Jackets took their first lead at the 16:18 mark off a layup. The teams then exchanged the lead seven minutes, before the Yellow Jackets took the lead for good with 8:03 left in the half. AIC led by as many as eight points in the final minutes and connected on nine free throws down the stretch as UNH tried to narrow the lead.
UNH was out-rebounded 41-38, while committing six more fouls, 18-12, than AIC. The Chargers shot 28.7 percent from the field, while AIC was not close behind at 38.3 percent.
Chaney led the Chargers with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Darryl Greene added 11 points.
The Chargers return to action on Saturday, February 6 at 4 p.m. against Southern Connecticut State University. The game is Pink Zone Day at Charger Gymnasium. All fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
