Stellmacher Three-Pointer With 0.6 Seconds Left Leads UNH to 46-45 Victory Over AIC

(02-03-10) WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's basketball team defeated the visiting American International College Yellow Jackets 46-45 at Charger Gymnasium. With the win the Chargers improve to 10-11 overall and 8-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 7-14 overall and 5-11 in the NE-10.

The Yellow Jackets opened up with a 4-0 run and held the Chargers scoreless for the first three minutes. The Chargers got on the board at the 17:11 mark on a layup from Yasmin Ithier-Vicenty. AIC continued to attack UNH offensively and took a nine-point lead with 13:33 left in the half. Freshman Jasmine Hardy gave New Haven a quick spark at the eight-minute mark, when she was fouled on a made three-pointer. She completed the rare four-point play after connecting from the foul line, cutting the AIC lead to three, 15-18. To close the half, New Haven went on a 6-0 run to bring the score within one, 22-23.

Dominique Stellmacher led the Chargers in the first half with seven points and five rebounds. Senior guard Helin Marte had 10 rebounds and five assists. The Chargers shot only 25.8% from the floor and 20.0% from the arc.

The Chargers opened the second half on a 6-0 run. Marte hit a layup at the 15:14 mark to give UNH a four-point lead, 28-24. Both teams were then held scoreless for four minutes until AIC's Kristin Boesenberg connected on a three-pointer cutting the New Haven lead to one, 28-27. New Haven brought the lead back up by four at the 10 minute mark with another three-pointer by Hardy. UNH held at least a two-point lead until the 3:09 when AIC tied the game, 37-37. After a layup and a pair of free-throws around the 3:00 mark, the game was tied for the second time, 39-39. Four free-throws by AIC put them up by four with 1:05 left in the game. However, UNH kept attacking the Yellow Jackets defense. After two free throws from Hardy and a jumper by Stellmacher, the Chargers tied the game, 43-43 with 21 seconds to play. AIC then hit a layup with six seconds remaining, giving them a two-point lead. UNH put the ball in Stellmacher's hands and she hit a running three-pointer with 0.6 seconds left to give the Chargers a one-point lead. AIC's attempt at a lob pass failed, giving the Chargers the win, 46-45.

Stellmacher led the Chargers for the game with 14 points and seven rebounds. Marte nearly missed a triple double with 12 rebounds, nine points, and eight assists. Ithier-Vicenty also played well for the Chargers with eight points, six rebounds, and seven steals. Hardy had nine points off the bench. The Chargers shot only 27.9% from the floor, however their pressure defense led AIC to 26 turnovers.

The Chargers are back in action on Saturday, February 6 when they host Southern Connecticut State University. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday is also Pink Zone Day at Charger Gymnasium. All fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
