MANCHESTER, N.H. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team fell 2-0 Saturday afternoon to No. 8 Southern New Hampshire University. With the loss the Chargers drop to 1-2-1 overall and 1-2 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The nationally ranked Penmen improve to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the NE-10.
The Penmen, ranked eighth in NCAA Division II, took the lead in the 23rd minute when they connected to take a 1-0 lead. However, the Chargers registered the first opportunity in third minute when
Joel Rodriguez (Wallingford, Conn./Mark T. Sheehan ) tallied a header shot just 2:02 into the first half.
Rodriguez tallied the Chargers only other first half shot on goal also. He registered his second shot on goal in the 42nd minute.
UNH was down 1-0 at halftime and trailed 9-7 in shots at halftime. The Chargers also tallied one save in the first half, keeping the game close.
The saves continued for the Chargers in the second half.
Jonathan Creem (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck ) tallied four saves in the first 35 minutes, once again keeping UNH within one. The Penmen improved their lead to 2-0 in the 81st minute when they connected on a header off a free kick. Joe D'Antonio was the Chargers last chance in the 87th minute with a shot that went wide.
UNH trailed 18-11 in overall shots, while the Penmen also led 6-2 in corner kicks as well. Creem kept the Chargers in the game with five second-half saves.
Nick Dionne (Meriden, Conn./O.H. Platt ) and Matt Sarazin led the Chargers with three shots each. Rodriguez and D'Antonio added two shots each.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday, September 15 when they travel to the College of Saint Rose. Kick off is set for 3:30 p.m.
