WEST HAVEN, Conn. – The University of New Haven men’s soccer team fell 4-0 Wednesday night at Southern Connecticut State University in a lightning-shortened game at Jess Dow Field. The Chargers fall to 2-4-1 overall and 2-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Owls improve to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the NE-10.
The Owls opened scoring in the eight minute with a pair of passes beat the Chargers backline and a shot found its way into UNH net. Southern went ahead 2-0 in the 24th minute when Ross McGibney netted his fifth goal of the season.
The Chargers trailed 10-6 in shots in the first half, while the SCSU goalkeeper made six saves.
Southern Connecticut improved upon its lead in the 57th minute when Paul Templeton netted a penalty kick to give the Owls a 3-0 lead. In the 72nd minute, immediately prior to the game being called, the Owls scored their final goal on an unassisted shot from 25-yards out.
Just seconds later, lightning in the area forced the game to be suspended and eventually called.
New Haven returns to action on Sunday, September 26 when Molloy College travels to Kayo Field for a non-conference matchup. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
