BOX SCORE Box Score

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team dropped its 2010 season opener 1-2 Friday afternoon to Dominican College in New York. The Chargers will now look for their first win on Sunday when they host Post University.

The Chargers were the first to have a scoring opportunity in the sixth minute when Meabh De Burca (County Galway, Ireland/Nat. University of Ireland-Galway) riffled a shot on net. Over the next eight minutes the Chargers amassed another four unanswered shots, but still couldn't muster a goal. Four UNH fouls preceded the game's first goal in the 24th minute when Dominican netted a shot from 18-yards out.

UNH riffled another three shots on goal before the end of the first half, taking an 8-3 advantage in first-half shots.

The Chargers wasted no time in the second half as De Burca scored just 22-seconds into the half. UNH continued to fire shots on goal throughout the second half, but the Dominican keeper and the goal post kept the Chargers from taking a lead.

Dominican eventually took the lead with just over seven minutes left in regulation. Holly Dawson (Banffshire, Scotland/The Gordon School, Huntly) was the Chargers last chance as she registered a shot on goal with 47 seconds left.

Despite the loss, the Chargers held an impressive 20-7 advantage in shots and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks. Dawson led the team with seven shots, while De Burca added five. In goal, Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) grabbed four saves and suffered the loss in the net for the Chargers.

The Chargers return to action on Sunday when they host Post at Kayo Field. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
