Romano Leads Chargers to 1-0 NE-10 Victory

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team defeated Assumption College 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the win the Chargers improve to 1-1-1 overall and 1-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Greyhounds fall to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the NE-10.

The game's only goal came in the 39th minute when junior Anthony Romano (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage) connected on a breakaway from within the 18-yard box. Romano netted his sixth career goal and first of the season.

Played mostly from end-to-end, the game was back-and-forth throughout most of the first half. Joe D'Antonio registered the first shot for the game in the fourth minute. Assumption answered back with a shot on goal in the ninth minute. The Greyhounds tallied three additional shots on goal prior to Romano scoring with 6:47 left in the first half. The Greyhounds riffled one more shot on goal in the final 35-seconds of the half.

Both teams were held scoreless, thanks to solid defense, throughout the second half. Gui Dos Santos (Curitiba, Brazil/Bethel (Conn.)) had one of the Chargers' best opportunities of the second half in the 59th minute, while Nick Pezzente (Old Saybrook, Conn./Home School) also registered a shot on goal.

The Chargers trailed 10-8 in shots and 5-3 in corner kicks, while UNH goalkeeper Jon Creem (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck ) led the game with eight saves in goal.

New Haven returns to action on Saturday, September 11 when they travel to Southern New Hampshire University. Game time in Manchester is set for 1 p.m. New Haven returns home on Sunday, September 19 when they host Franklin Pierce.
