Second Half Surge Sends Stonehill Past Chargers

Box Score

WEST HAVEN, CONN. – The University of New Haven men’s basketball team welcomed Stonehill College to North Campus on Sunday afternoon for a Northeast-10 Conference showdown. Despite a team-high 15 points from Mike Stys and 14 points from Sean Harris, the Chargers fell short by the final score of 78-57 at Charger Gymnasium.

With the loss, UNH dropped to 3-11 on the season and 2-9 in conference play. The Skyhawks improved to 13-3 and 8-3 in the league.

The first half featured a tough start for the hosting Chargers. The Skyhawks mounted an 8-2 advantage in the opening minutes, also drawing three quick fouls on Robert Jamerson. However, tenacious defense and a balanced attack closed the gap and even granted UNH a 14-13 lead at the midway mark.

Stonehill battled back and opened an eight point margin but Sean Harris knocked down three baskets to keep the Chargers within striking distance. At the sound of the halftime whistle, UNH trailed by six, 31-25.

Harris, Jeffery Adkins and Mike Stys paced the offense with six points apiece in the first half. Mike Kernan finished with a half-high eight points, while Ivan Almeida and Brian Hamor each added six for the Skyhawks.

The second half told a different story than the first as the Skyhawks extended their lead to double-figures. Stonehill nearly doubled the Chargers in points in the paint (42-24) and controlled the boards with a 47-19 margin. UNH battled to cut into its deficit but couldn’t overcome Stonehill’s advantage en route to the Chargers fourth consecutive.

Stys and Harris carried the load offensively for the Chargers, combining 29 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the floor. Stys connected on five from behind the arc and Harris added four assists and three rebounds. Adkins finished with 11 points, Justin Exum had eight and Jeremy Williams tallied seven in the losing effort.

Kernan registered a game-high 19 points and eight rebounds for the Skyhawks. Almeida recorded a double-double with 10 and 10, while Adam Fazzini chimed in with 13 points.
