POST GAME INTERVIEW
WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Led by a 106th minute goal from
Dave Ljungquist (Oxford, Conn./Seymour), the University of New Haven men's soccer team pulled off a 2-1 victory over Saint Michael's College at Kayo Field Friday afternoon. With the win, the Chargers have posted a 3-0-1 record in their last four games, have a 3-7-3 overall record and a 2-6-1 Northeast-10 Conference record. The Purple Knights fell to 4-7-2 overall and 2-6-1 on conference play.
After a high booted ball was settled and passed by
Edwin Carvajal (Norwalk, Conn./Wilton), Joseph D'Antonio flicked the ball on to Ljungquist who scored the ball in the side of the Purple Knights' net. The score broke a 1-1 tie at the 105:21 mark.
The Chargers' took an early lead when the Purple Knights tried to clear a ball in the 16th minute, but instead the ball found Saint Michael's own goal. New Haven carried the lead through the entire first half as well.
After halftime, Saint Michael's tied the game at 1-1 in the 76th minute after possessing the ball for a majority of the period. In the closing minutes of the second half, UNH recorded two shots on goal, while the Purple Knights only shot sailed high in the 89th minute.
The first overtime period was back and forth as well.
Firmiano Ribeiro (Barreiras, Brazil/B.M.C. Durfee / Franklin Pierce University) recorded a header shot which went wide in the 92nd minute, while
Jonathan Creem (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck ) made a save in the 94th and 100th minutes to keep the game tied at 1-1.
Ljungquist then found the ball on the first shot of the second overtime period and fired it past Saint Michael's goalkeeper.
Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut) led the Chargers with three shots on goal, while Ljungquist added two shots. Creem recorded six saves in goal for UNH as well.
New Haven returns to action on Wednesday, October 19 when they travel to Assumption College for another NE-10 match. Game time in Worcester, Mass. is set for 7 p.m. at Multi-Sport Stadium.
