POST GAME INTERVIEW
WEST HAVEN, Conn. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team, lifted by a pair of goals by
Shannon Morales (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic), defeated Le Moyne College 4-1 Tuesday afternoon at Kayo Field. With the win, the Chargers moved to 7-7 overall and 5-7 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Dolphins fell to 3-11 overall and 2-10 in conference play.
After back-and-forth play for a majority of the first half, the Chargers took a 1-0 lead heading into halftime off a header goal from
Nicole Pacapelli (West Haven, Conn./West Haven / Stonehill College). The sophomore put away the ball off a corner kick of
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) in the 44th minute. The corner kick was the Chargers 11th corner kick of the half and it finally paid off. The Chargers also recorded seven shots in the first half, including five on goal.
The UNH scoring spree broke out in the second half. In the 54th minute,
Shannon Morales (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) scored the eventual game-winner off an assist by
Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport). Le Moyne then closed the score to 2-1 after a goal in the 58th minute. The Chargers then took over and control possession for nearly the rest of the half. Two shots and two corner kicks came before Morales scored her second goal of the game off a shot from 20-yards out. The ball sailed into the back from the right side and found the left post before deflecting into the back of the net. With a 3-1 lead, the Chargers scored an insurance goal in the 81st minute when
Courtney Marra (New Fairfield, Conn./Immaculate) and
Monica Yanez (West Haven, Conn./West Haven) connected on a beautiful one-two ball inside the box. Le Moyne managed one shot in the closing minutes, but the Chargers held on and secured the 4-1 victory.
Morales and Marra each recorded a team-high three shots, while
Heather Timmons (Billerica, Mass./Billerica Memorial), Simms and Pacapelli each added two.
Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) stay strong in the net for the Chargers and recorded three saves.
The Chargers return to action on Saturday, October 22 when they travel to Saint Michael's College in Colchester, Vt. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
