Men's Soccer Wins Third Straight, Fourth of Last Five

WORCESTER, Mass. - The University of New Haven men's soccer team defeated Assumption College 2-1 Wednesday night in its third-straight win. The Chargers improved to 4-7-3 and 3-6-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the victory. Assumption fell to 2-8-1 overall and 2-7-1 in conference play.

New Haven took an early lead in Wednesday's match. The Chargers' Clancy Purcell (Shelton, Conn./Taft / University of Connecticut) served a corner kick ball into the Greyhounds' goalie box and after a defender headed the ball it found the back of the Greyhounds net. New Haven took a 1-0 lead off the own goal. The Chargers tallied only two other shots in the first half, while Assumption recorded seven shots in the opening period.

The Chargers scored their second and eventual game-winning goal in the opening minutes of the half as well. Just 15 minutes into the half, New Haven's Dave Ljungquist (Oxford, Conn./Seymour) received a pass from Gui Dos Santos (Curitiba, Brazil/Bethel (Conn.)) and Edwin Carvajal (Norwalk, Conn./Wilton) to give the Chargers a 2-0 lead. Assumption gained possession in most of the final minutes and were rewarded with a goal in the 73rd minute. In the final 15 minutes, the Greyhoudns recorded three shots, but failed to even the score as the Chargers sealed their fourth win in the last five games.

Assumption amassed another seven shots in the second half, while the Chargers added just five. UNH goalkeeper Jonathan Creem (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck ) tallied two saves in the win, while  Ljungquist lead the team with three shots.
