GARDEN CITY, N.Y. - The University of New Haven women's soccer team defeated Adelphi University 1-0 Wednesday night in Long Island. With the win, the Chargers improved to 8-8 overall and 6-8 in the Northeast-10 Conference and keep their shot at the NE-10 postseason alive with the win. The Panthers fell to 8-8 overall and 6-8 in conference play as well.
Throughout the first half, UNH and Adelphi split scoring opportunities. The Chargers managed eight shots, compared to five by the Panthers. In the opening 12 minutes, the Chargers recorded five shots, including four shots on goal. Adelphi then tallied three shots before New Haven fired three down the stretch. Neither team capitalized in the opening 45-minutes and were tied 0-0 at halftime.
The Panthers took a majority of the shots in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Chargers took control near the 67-minute mark.
Brenna Weidman (Holliston, Mass./Holliston / Utica College) then attempted a corner kick in the 72nd minute which bounced off an Adelphi defender and found the back of the Panthers' net. The goal, proved to be the game-winner and gave UNH a 1-0 lead with less than 30 minutes remaining. Adelphi rifled shots in the final 25 minutes, but the Chargers' defense held solid and led the team to a 1-0 shutout victory.
Freshman
Amber Simms (Southport, England/Southport) led the team with five shots, including four on goal.
Lucy Francisco (Lawrence, Mass./Lawrence ) added four shots, while
Nicole Pacapelli (West Haven, Conn./West Haven / Stonehill College) tallied three shots.
Kim Taylor (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) recorded the shutout victory between the posts with seven saves in all 90 minutes.
The Chargers, in need of one more win to advance to the NE-10 postseason, conclude their 2011 regular season on Saturday, October 29 when they travel to Southern New Hampshire University. Game time in Machester, N.H. on Saturday is set for 1 p.m.
